5 best mosquito repellent (non-toxic) for your baby

Infections such as Dengue, chikungunya are quite common. Commercial mosquito repellents have many chemicals that can have a bad effect on children. Air fresheners and coil type repellents have been known to cause serious breathing related allergies and infections. Being a mom to a toddler, my main concern always was to ensure protection and safety to my baby. Don't you also feel same? I can hear a big YES from all of you! Well, I have solutions too!! Homemade non toxic mosquito repellents can be used any time without any second thought as they are healthy and chemical free. So, here are 5 Homemade non toxic mosquito repellents.

#1. Neem Oil:

According to study by the US National Research Council neem oil is a very effective mosquito repellent. Neem oil is easily available at most medical stores. You can dilute neem oil with any other oil such as coconut oil and apply on your skin to prevent mosquitoes. Alternatively, you can also keep bunch of neem leaves in your room to avoid mosquitoes.

#2. Garlic:

Garlic is well known for its pungent and strong smell - which makes it a great mosquito repellent. You can either eat garlic on a daily basis or keep some garlic cloves in your room for protection from mosquitoes.

#3: Essential Oils:

Essential oil such as eucalyptus oil, citronella, cinnamon oil, castor oil, rosemary, peppermint are well known natural mosquito repellent. You can mix a couple of drops and mix it with baby lotion or baby oil and use it on skin to prevent mosquito bites. Essential oils should not be used undiluted, so be very careful when using them around children. Please Note: Essential oils should not be used for babies less than 6 months. #4. Tulsi:

Tulsi or basil, is an ancient Indian herb - well known for its medicinal property. Besides than that it's believed that tulsi is an excellent mosquito repellent. It's believed that if tulsi grown in garden or kept inside home works best as mosquito repellent.

#5: Coconut Fibers:

Dried coconut fires are well known as mosquito repellents. These are easily available with any vegetable vendor. Cut them into pieces with knife and place in a mud pot. Ignite them with help of match stick. Fumes rising from fires repellents Mosquito. Since fumes comes from natural source so they are not harmful and completely safe.

How to make Mosquito repellent at home?

Here's the method to make liquid mosquito repellents at home. Fill this liquid in any empty mosquito repellent bottle and use. Ingredients:
  • Coconut oil: 100ml
  • Citronella oil: 10ml
  • Neem oil: 20ml
  • Eucalyptus oil: 10ml
  • Tea tree oil: 10ml
  • Castor oil: 20ml
  • Mustard oil:20ml
  • Camphor tabs: 10-12 tabs
Method:
  • Take washed and dried glass bottle.
  • Put all ingredients in bottle as per mentioned quantity.
  • Crush camphor tabs to powder form and add in the mixture.
  • Shake bottle vigorously.
  • Natural Mosquito repellent is ready.
  • Put this in any empty spray bottle and use as required.

Usage:

  • You can apply this oil on clothes, bedsheets. Direct application on skin is not advisable, you may get a mild burning sensation from the camphor.
  • Make a mosquito patch, using bandaid and pouring few drops of this oil over it.
  • This oil can also be used as lamp oil to keep mosquitos at bay.

Handy Tips:

  • Shake bottle before every use.
  • Store bottle in cool, damp, dark place.
  • Prepare small quantity at once and use it quickly for good results.
